Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) goes into effect one year from today on May 25, 2018. Numerous blogs, articles, webinars and eBooks have been distributed that address the subject. Just recently, Microsoft luminaries Brad Smith, Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer, Julia White, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, and Brendon Lynch, Microsoft Chief Privacy Officer addressed Microsoft’s commitment to individual’s privacy rights in a webinar.

They state that “Microsoft has long been a champion of individuals’ privacy rights and views the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as an important step forward in clarifying and enabling individual data privacy rights.” Further, they make some recommendations regarding how organizations tackle their own GDPR compliance. Microsoft suggests, among other solutions, moving to the Microsoft cloud to help accelerate organization’s becoming GDPR compliant.

There are several other public sources that offer advice on how your organization might prepare, including:

All of these sources offer great advice that needs to be heeded sooner rather than later. A year from today, consequences of non-compliance will, as we know from previous blogs, become fierce (fines imposed can be 20 million Euros, or up to four percent of a company’s global annual turnover, whichever is greater.)

What’s missing? None of these sources clearly calls for the kind of comprehensive, centralized approach to secure access control that Software-Defined Perimeter (SDP) solutions offer.

AppGate, Cryptzone’s SDP solution, provides unified, granular access control to applications, services and infrastructure, regardless of location, whether on-premises or in the cloud and applies the same level of access control scrutiny to devices brought into the environment by third-parties, contractors, or your own employees. It also provides logging data to help meet reporting requirements including those associated with the GDPR.

Enterprises leveraging AppGate can improve security, maintain productivity, reduce operational costs and be on their way to meeting the EU GDPR security requirements. If you haven’t already, it’s time to get started.
